A) Turn On Your Gas Furnace-
Although it sounds like a fairly easy step, many people do not know how to do it. The steps are provided below on how you can do so-
- Locate the breaker for your furnace. It is a part of the electrical panel that is located in your basement.
- Next, turn on the furnace switch. It is usually somewhere near the bottom of the basement stairs, sometimes in the furnace room or ceiling or at the eye level.
- Set the thermostat- You need to check that the furnace is on and check if the selector switch reads Heat.
B) Check and Change Your Furnace Filter-
If you maintain your furnace filter, it can regulate the airflow from your furnace and will keep it running regularly and efficiently when you require it the most! To prevent burnout of your furnace, it is advisable that you inspect your filter monthly and change it either tri-monthly or half a year.
- Carefully open the furnace’s external rack or panel door
- Remove the filter by sliding it out.
- If you cannot see through the filter, you need a new one.
C) Test Your Furnace’s Airflow:
If your home feels too chilly, this is an indication that your furnace is not walking. There is a way of testing the airflow from your furnace registers; this is known as the garbage bag airflow test. Although this is not a scientifically approved test, it can give you a basic idea as to whether or not to call an electrician.
To do the test-
- Tape the mouth of the garbage bag to a coat hanger or piece of cardboard.
- Crush the bag and place it over the register or exhaust hood.
- Count the number of seconds it takes for the bag to fully inflate.
The garbage bag airflow test is also useful if you have changed your heating or cooling systems or have made major renovations to your house.
